At the risk of sounding unsensitive, I don't think very many of those people were celebrating Xmas.

Yes, it's a sad loss of life... but check this out:

(From CNN.com article here )

In a news conference at U.N. headquarters in New York, Egeland called for a major international response -- and went so far as to call the U.S. government and others "stingy" on foreign aid in general.

"If, actually, the foreign assistance of many countries now is 0.1 or 0.2 percent of the gross national income, I think that is stingy, really," he said. "I don't think that is very generous."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It blows my mind that a UN spokesperson has the nerve to say that kind of thing. It's almost as if people around the world expect the US to take care of them more than their own governments do. And when something happens in the US...... it's expected that we will take care of everything on our own. Yes, that may be because we're the only superpower left, and we have the resources to spare.... but hell, it's all about the gesture. Even Santa Claus gets cookies and milk for his effort.
That quote pisses me off to no end. The UN is a worthless political entity, noble in ideals but useless in reality. Much like its predecessor.
Yeah.. it's all over the talk radio this morning when I drive to work. For years I have been saying UN doing nothing but craping all over the world. I say we need to kick them out of N.Y City.
speaking of the disaster...did anyone watch discovery channel this wknd? they were showing documentaries about tsunamis & earthquakes. pretty interesting stuff. they said that one of the canary islands is considered extremely dangerious. it has a extinct volcano on the south side & an active volcano on the north side. they also metioned something like the volcano could cause a collapse of the island that would create a tsunami that could wipe out all of the atlantic coast. from NYC to Miami. there was another one on the big island of Hawaii. some huge crack. i forgot what the locals called it... but they were saying that if that falls into the ocean, all of the pacific coast would be gone....
its something that wouldnt happen in our lifetime, but its amazing of what were learning from today's science
