hey... what ever happened to the Rio players? are they still around? those are the first (popular) MP3 players that i can recall. hell... they started off serial-based... and came with cables with DB-9 connectors. once USB and USB2/firewire came out, it got crazy.

Correction. It's DB-25 using the printer port. Rio is still around they also have a nice 5 GB HD version call the Carbon. Looks nice too.

I like the H10 when I saw it at CES, but Zen Micro have Outlook sync. Kinda hard to decided.

Unless you're planning to go work out with it.

That's subjective. Some people are perfectly happy with 20-30 songs. I used to have Walkman and Minidisc and they don't even hold that many.

iPod Shuffle does have it advantage. it's small and starts at 512mb for only $99. My Muvo is $90 and only 256mb. There is the 1gb version for only $150 and it can carry lots of data. I'm afraid the shuffle will become just as popular. Other flash base player will have to come up with bigger memory or lower it's price again to compete with Apple. BTW, lots of existing flash base players are still USB 1.1. sux! That's why I like my Muvo. FM/TX USB 2.0 got a recorder and FM radio.

yeah.... the key to stuff like ipod shuffles and such is the fact that you can use them as USB drives too. so higher capacities for those kinda things aren't as crucial.... or not as crucial depending how much capacity you need for data storage.

Wow, I think you're SOL on that. From what I've seen, even FM radio reception isn't always available for most MP3 players.

on the flipside, i have no idea what use 5GB+ worth of music does in a portable walkman-like unit. sure, it's nice to have EVERY ALBUM THAT YOU'VE EVER OWNED in the palm of your hand, but it's not very practical since out of the couple thousands of songs you can store, you'll REALLY only listen to a small fraction of of those songs. you're almost better off getting something like an ipod shuffle and chaging up the songs every other day or so... plus, it wouldn't take too long to do either.

Well, in this case, I don't understand the reasoning behind limiting yourself to only 2 albums on an MP3 player. To me, that's like having a single-disc CD player instead of a 500 disc jukebox, especially when the size/weight difference is negligible. With a smaller-spaced MP3 player, you'll either be listening to the same songs over and over, or constantly importing new music from your PC to get "fresh" songs. Even if, with thousands of songs you only listen to a fraction of them... that's the kind of "freshness" a larger space offers. Songs aren't repeated over and over, UNLESS you want them to.

As far as the RDD function of MP3 players, again... why limit yourself to a smaller space, especially when that space is shared with your MP3s? 512 MB, 1 Gig... they both seem awfully small to me, especially considering that more than half of my MP3s are encoded in 160 kbps quality or above, with the the majority of THOSE being 192 kbps.

I have to admit, though, the pricing of the new iPod models are very attractive for flash-based players. That alone will draw many potential customers, I'm sure.

i agree. the concept of "small and simple" is gonna sell in my opinion.

i usually rip songs at around 128 kbps and it seems to sound fine to me. that being the case, it uses less storage and you can squeeze a few more songs in. ideally, i'll aim for a player that'll hold maybe 3 hours of music or so (although i wouldn't mind 4 hours).

128 kbps is good for MP3 players and earbuds, but I also listen to my MP3s at home and in my car (through the cassette adaptor). Having 192 kbps-encoded MP3s makes a big difference, even for a non-audiophile like me. You might want to look into getting the higher bitrate versions of your songs, especially if you're going to be playing MP3s in your car. Having 320 kbps would be ideal, especially for listening to MP3s in the car, but with a 5 gb limit on my player, it wouldn't be a good idea since I have so many MP3s. But hey... whatever floats your boat or fits your needs.
